Fire Damaged Ferrari 308 GTS Becomes World’s First All-Electric Ferrari

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Ferrari, announced to the world last year that Ferrari would never build an electric car. This announcement was the result of the Prancing Horse CEO taking a drive in the newest performance model being offered by the all-electric car company, Tesla Motors. After driving the Tesla, Marchionne stated that the idea of Ferrari having an all-electric model was “an obscene concept”. While Ferrari may have zero intentions of going zero emissions, the boys over at Electric GT have taken on the task of building the world’s first all-electric Ferrari by bringing a Ferrari 308 GTS back from the dead.

Eric Hutchison from Electric GTS based out of San Diego, found the Ferrari 308 GT made popular by the TV series Magnum P.I. at a salvage yard for $10,000. The 308 GTS was a victim of an engine fire resulting from a fuel leak. Hutchison partnered with his close friend Michael Bream at EV West to begin the process of bring the Ferrari 308 back to life. The first order of business was to remove as much weight as possible from the vehicle to compensate for the installation of a fully electric powertrain. Other interesting aspects to this build include the addition of a five-speed G50 gearbox that was taken out of a Porsche. The decision to go with a conventional transmission was inspired by the setup that is commonly found in the Formula E all-electric racing series. Three AC51 HPEVS electric motors were installed in the Ferrari 308 GTS to create a power output of 415 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. “The massive torque transferring through the transmission engages the driver in a clutch-dropping, gear-pounding Ferrari experience,” Hutchison recently explained.
