New 'Point Break' Film Features Most Extreme Wingsuit Sequence Ever

Today, “Point Break” is most well-known for its visually stunning action sequences featuring intense surfing scenes and breathtaking skydiving maneuvers and is now being remade for a new generation. Where the original 1991 film showcased skydiving as the pinnacle of extreme, the updated remake is taking it one step further with a wingsuit stunt sequence for the ages.

WINGSUIT

Back in 1991, almost two decades before her magnum opus, “The Hurt Locker,” director Kathryn Bigelow brought us the exhilarating story of Bodhi and Johnny Utah in “Point Break.” A box office success at its release, the tale of an undercover FBI agent, Johnny Utah and the California surfing gang leader Bodhi (played by Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze respectively), has gone on to become a cult favorite.

Jeb Corliss, a professional skydiver, acted as the wingsuit stunt advisor for the 2015 version of “Point Break” and has said that it is “the most hardcore stunt (wingsuit related or otherwise) ever filmed.” Corliss told media at the premiere of the film that the entirety of the wingsuit sequences were filmed without the use of CGI or wires in what is sure to be an awe-inspiring visual display. The remake needs to bring out its best, considering the original 1991 film contains what is highly regarded as one of the most impressive stunts ever filmed when Reeves’ character jumps out of a plane, sans parachute, to chase after Swayze’s.

The 2015 remake of “Point Break” hit theaters last Friday on Christmas day, but only time will tell if it can carry on the powerful legacy of stunt work left by its predecessor.
