The Formula-One racing division of McLaren Automotive just released a concept of where the future of Formula-One racing is going. The McLaren MP4-X was designed specifically to harness all the aspects of Formula-One like speed, excitement and performance. According to John Allert, the Group Brand Director of McLaren Technology Group, their futuristic McLaren MP4-X concept racecar was meant to, “peer into the future and imagine the art of the possible.”
First and foremost, we’re well aware that the McLaren MP4-X is, at its heart, nothing more than a concept car, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited about it. McLaren’s latest Formula-One racer looks like it just drove off the screen of the latest Hollywood sci-fi flick. However, it isn’t the MP4-X’s striking design that’s the most fascinating. McLaren’s forward thinking is more apparent here than ever before, with its magnified focus on driver safety and hybrid power technology.
McLaren’s MP4-X’s enclosed cockpit makes it look more like a jet fighter than a racecar, but what was most impressive was the way it utilizes alternate power sources to fuel this beast of a racecar. The combination of solar power and inductive coupling between the car and the track make this concept car a real glimpse into the future of high-performance driving.
Aside from its hybrid power technology, the MP4-X’s chassis is capable of adjusting its shape based on the current track conditions and aerodynamic demands. This ability to adjust on the fly even extends to the driver’s helmet, which is connected to a camera feed connected to the car. The video feed streams directly into the driver’s helmet, effectively giving them a 360-degree view of their surroundings and allowing them to adjust as they see fit.
Whether this is the future of Formula-One racing or just another dream of an ambitious car designer, one thing’s for sure, McLaren’s MP4-X is certainly something we’d love to see on our track someday at SPEEDVEGAS.
