Nissan’s new GT-R Drone

The Nissan GT-R remains one of the quickest supercars ever produced with a neck-snapping 0-60 mph time of just 2.6 seconds. To keep up with the GT-R Nissan has designed a drone that is capable of delivering a 0-60 mph in just 1.3 seconds with a top speed of 115 mph. This miniature quad-copter allows Nissan to take some breathtaking images of the GT-R at much closer distances than what was previously possible.

TOP SPEED

To test out the new drone, Nissan brought the newly designed 2017 GT-R to the track. The GT-R drone is outfitted with 2000kv motors that are encased in a custom design specifically engineered to reduce drag and optimize performance creating speeds that are very similar to what is found in drone racing championships. Nissan’s GT-R drone is a FPV type, so it’s flown is the same fashion as a competition drone. The pilot is equipped with a headset that relays a drone-eye-view to the operator allowing the pilot of the drone to maneuver with pinpoint precision at high speeds. In the video, the drone is being flown by 2015 British National Drone Racing Champion James Bowles and the car is being driven by NISMO driver Ricardo Sanchez.

As expected, the drone is able to get off of the line faster than the four-wheel GT-R before losing out to an almost 80 mph difference in top end speed. The GT-R drone is able to stay right with the faster GT-R since the drone is much more nimble and is able to deliver a 0.3m turning circle versus 12.2m turning radius of the 2017 Nissan GT-R.
