Brad Keselowski Overcomes Penalty, Harsh Weather Conditions to Win Kobalt 400 in Las Vegas

Brad Keselowski had to overcome plenty of adversity on Sunday during the Kobalt 400 to include rain, strong winds and even a dust storm to take the “Blue Deuce” to Victory Lane. In addition to all of the challenges that were put in place by Mother Nature, Keselowski was penalized on Lap 180 for speeding on pit road. This resulted in the driver of the #2 having to serve a pass-through penalty that put him a lap down. The 2012 Sprint Cup champion then had to fight his way back on to the lead lap before making the race-winning pass with just five to go. This marks his first victory since taking the checkered flag in Fontana last March.

“It’s a great feeling, one of the best feelings,” said Keselowski, who has now won two of the last three Sprint Cup events to take place at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. “It’s a feeling I live for, a feeling I dream about often, being the fastest guy and having an opportunity.”

Keselowski was able to achieve victory by passing Las Vegas native Kyle Bush, driver of the #18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. “For Team Penske, it’s our 50th anniversary. To get the first win of the year, it feels real good. When I focused in (on Bush) and saw how his car was sliding and the line he was running, I knew we could win the race.”

By securing a victory at the Kobalt 400, Keselowski has locked-in his spot as one of the 16 drivers who will compete in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR’S version of a post season that involves a bracket-style elimination process that will take place over the last ten races of the season.
